Open call: training program for aspiring journalists and editors

As part of the 15th edition of Kulturpunkt’s Journalism School, we are opening applications for a parallel online program directed at aspiring and entry-level journalists from any age group. Participation is free of charge, and there are 20 available spots for this cycle.

This online program is crafted to address the current challenges and disparities within the media industry and wider cultural sector, as well as to reshape the landscape of newsrooms, with a particular emphasis on promoting inclusiveness and representation.

The program begins on September 26 and lasts until December 19, 2024.
The program is held online on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 PM to 8 PM CET.
Participants will receive a detailed schedule and program at the first meeting.

The online program is designed in three parts.

The first part is designed to acquaint the participants with various journalistic tools: investigative reporting (Barbara Matejčić), fact-checking (Petar Vidov), data journalism (Jelena Prtorić), solution journalism (Dora Santos Silva), AI and journalism (TBA). The first segment will also offer an introduction to the field of media pluralism (Iva Nenadić) and EU media regulation – Media Freedom Act and Digital Services Act (Jelena Berković).

The second segment interweaves issues of sustainability and green transition with the concepts of care and slow mobility and the future of work in the cultural and media sector (Ana Žuvela, Davor Mišković, Goran Tomka and Višnja Kisić). This will be done through mapping of existing cultural and artistic practices that reflect, question and offer an alternative way of working and reacting in the cultural sector.

The third segment refers to the presentation of media practices for inclusion of unrepresented groups in social processes. Media outlets In Portal and Phralipen from Zagreb, KLFM from Split, Meduza from Skopje and Oblakoder from Belgrade are invited to present their work, each with its own specific focus and the community it represents. They will share recommendations on how to include members of minority groups in reporting on themselves.

Beyond the training course, participants will have the opportunity to propose and work on their journalistic and editorial projects. Selected projects will receive financial support and mentoring, allowing participants to contribute meaningful media pieces with guidance from experienced editors.

Applications for the educational program are being accepted via ONLINE FORM until September 15, 2024 at 12 PM CET.

The applications must contain contact information, a short curriculum vitae, a personal statement and a short author’s overview of the selected topic from the field of media and/or culture.

You can send all inquiries related to the application and the program to the address kurziv.platforma@gmail.com

On September 5, 2024 at 6 PM CET, an online Q&A session will be held via ZOOM where we will answer all your questions.

All applicants will be notified of the results of the selection by email no later than September 20, 2024.
