The Polish government’s attempt to abolish abortion rights in 2016 was one battle in a historical civil war, in a country where modernization has always been at the expense of sexual equality. After the Black Monday protests, rebellion has gone underground in art created by women.
Agata Czarnacka
Philosopher and journalist. She became involved with the Polish women’s movement in the late 1990s. She was a member of the Ratujmy Kobiety and Ratujmy Kobiety 2017 committees, as well as their predecessor Tak dla Kobiet. From 2012 to 2015 she was a member of the political council of the Polish Socialist Party (SLD), head of the Equality and Democracy chapter of the party program. She has written for Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka, Newsweek Polska, Krytyka Polityczna and the Polish edition of Le Monde diplomatique.
